North Carolina

North Carolina’s Supreme Court has seven justices. Currently there are six Democratic justices and one Repubican justice. North Carolina conducts partisan elections. In 2020, three seats are in contention.

Chief Justice Cheri Beasley (D) was appointed to the court in 2012 by Democratic Governor Bev Perdue. She was appointed as Chief Justice in 2019 by Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.

Chief Justice Cheri Beasley is being challenged by Justice Paul Martin Newby (R). Justice Newby has been on the Supreme Court since 2005, and he is now running for the position of Chief Justice.

Judge Lucy N. Inman (D) has been a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals since 2015. She is running for the vacant seat that Justice Newby is leaving in order to run for Chief Justice

Judge Phil Berger (R) has been a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals since 2016. He is also running for the vacant seat that Justice Newby is leaving.

Justice Mark Davis (D) was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019 by Democratic Governor 2019 by Democratic Governor Roy Cooper, after Justice Beasley vacated the seat to become Chief Justice.

Justice Davis is being challenged by Tamara Barringer, a former state senator who served in the state senate from 2013 to 2019.
